The mage temporarily turns his/her skin into a metallic, flexible carapace which deflects blows and absorbs impact, but is vulnerable to electricity. Still, the ratio of lightning wielding mages to sword swinging psychopaths is pretty low. Electrical damage like that from Call Lightning will cause double damage.
