The behemoth is one of the oldest living beings on the surface of Gaeis. They resemble huge bears or hippos with thick hides. They have a mane which surrounds their necks and runs back along their spine. Long, sharp tusks protrude from the sides of their head, which is set low in front of the creatures haunches. Behemoths have flat backs and hunched backs. Their feet end in short, stubby digits which end in tough nails. They are also gifted with opposable thumbs. It has been theorized they are distant relations to elephants or mammoths, but since they possess no trunk, this is highly contested.
Behemoths are solitary, diurnal creatures. They are omnivores which prefer foliage over meat, and so possess little danger to other animals unless angered or agitated. When this happens, behemoths are capable of trampling anything nearby. They stand nearly 30 feet high to the shoulder with little behavioral or physical difference between males and females. It is easier for a behemoth to walk on all four of its legs, but they possess the grace and balance to move upright on their hind legs as well, resembling apes in this function.
Taming a behemoth is a difficult process, to say the least. They are difficult to control, but some cultures have found ways to employ them as domesticated beasts of burden, aids in construction and demolition, or as furious mounts ridden into battle. Controlling a behemoth usually involves the rider being mounted on a howdah, platform or cage strapped to the behemoth's back. Reins are often tethered to the beast's tusks or to piercings in the ears, nose or eyebrows. Being treated roughly in this manner angers the beast, which is used to great or catastrophic results in war. Often, huge helmets, pieces of armor, shields of conquered foes, and vicious offensive adornments are strapped to a behemoth to help them in war.
In combat, behemoths prefer large, open spaces where they can maneuver freely and use their charge maul their opponents.
All Behemoths have the following powers:
- Dangerous Movement
- Due to their enormous size, Behemoths can do damage to other creatures just by moving past or over them. Any creature the Behemoth comes into contact with while it moves suffers an attack made using the Behemoth's Hand-to-Hand Stomp attack.
- Behemoth Charge
- Once a Behemoth begins charging, it is impossible for normal sized beings to stop it with force. Any attacks made by the Behemoth while charging receive a +6 bonus to Hurt.
- Tusks
- A Behemoth may attack with its tusks, impaling or smashing into targets. The tusks have a Hurt score of 12.
- Stomp
- A Behemoth may attack with its thick feet by stomping on intended victims. This attack uses the Behemoth's hand-to-hand weapon skill and has a Hurt score of 20.
