There are some beings whose will is too strong to be extinguished by death.  When these people die, pieces of their soul linger in the world, eventually reforming as a Dolon, a kind of wispy phantom or ghost.  These beings then take possession of the recently (or not-so-recently) deceased and use their bodies as hosts.  These ''shells'' provide the Dolons with a means of interaction with the world.
