Your mentor or role model is no longer alive, but that hasn't stopped him/her from tutoring you. The ghostly mentor may choose who is able to perceive it and is completely immaterial, thus useless in combat situations. The spirit mentor's function is simply to give advice and guide you and is only present in situations the GM deems acceptable.
