Dolons are the restless souls of beings who were unable to peacefully depart the physical world, and are now trapped there in the decaying bodies of their former lives. It takes time for the discombobulated soul to find its way back to the body, anywhere from days to years. This is a process of remembering identity as well, evolving from pure emotion to fully-realized consciousness. Once it does this and takes possession of its old body, the being rises as a Dolon. This is often problematic for a person who has been buried, as they have to claw their way back to the surface. After a Dolon takes possession of their body, the body continues to decay, but at a much slower state than before. Dolons usually seek out disguises to hide their decaying state, covering themselves in armor, rags, masks, etc. The only pre-requisite for the creation of a Dolon is that there remained extremely powerful emotions or compelling unfinished business when the being died, as well as some sort of (at least) skeletal remains. Cremated persons will not be able to return as Dolons. If even the skull is still roughly intact, the Dolon can use that, and tales of floating, talking skulls are more than old wives tales. Some cultures refer to a Dolon as a Bag o' Bones, and cremate their dead in an effort to avoid the phenomenon of undead.

Dolons do not eat, drink or sleep, per se, but do feel the need to rest. Their souls still retain many of the habits of their former lives. Most Dolons will seek to finish whatever business was left undone when they died, or follow on with whatever motivations they had. Unfortunately, there is no end to their state until their remains are completely disintegrated and scattered. Some Dolons view themselves as accursed and believe falsely that there is some purpose which they must fulfill before their soul can depart the body. Unfortunately for them, this is untrue.
