Doormen are an ancient race of beings tasked long ago with tending the portals and back stairs of many worlds, keeping travel by way of magic a viable and safe route. Over the ages, many of them have died off, or more appropriately, been killed off, and the portals and places they once tended have fallen into disrepair. Why would the other beings of the world treat them with such malice?
One culprit could be their appearance: Doormen resemble a hooded humanoid with a ruin of a face which is spotted with many eyes staring from within the folds of its robes. Their hands are made of chitinous pincher-like digits. They stand on two legs and have a mouth, but no nose to speak of and burned-looking, dark skin. They are hairless. The proper name for the doormen has long been forgotten, and their numbers have dwindled so much that they are in danger of dying off completely. Even the origin of their nick-name of "Doormen" has faded, for portals and mirror-worlds are strange and fearsome places to most common folk.
Doormen eat meat, veggies and just about all other food most humanoids eat. Doormen exist in mostly in isolation, fearful and hateful of the judgment of other beings, and have been driven a bit nutty because of it. They live for several hundred years at least, and their ancient task of tending portals prevents them from forming much of a community for protection. Depending on a Doorman's particular state of mental well-being, it may react amiably and helpfully to others or deviously and murderously. Some Doormen have twisted their charge in their minds so that they believe it is their duty to prevent anyone from using the portals or mirror-worlds. These Doormen will stalk and set traps for travelers to fall into, so that they will not live to use the portal a second time.
It is worth noting that the term "Doormen" does not designate gender: doormen can be male or female, though fewer females do exist.
All Doormen have the following powers:
