Part of the charm of Dieselpunk is in the gadgetry.  In times of war, the fires of industry burn brightly, churning out materiel and advanced technology in a race to overwhelm and overcome the enemy.  On the home front, companies endeavor to invent appliances, vehicles, and tools to make citizens' lives easier.  Listed here are some of the technologies one might find in a Dieselpunk world.  But don't stop here; the next big advancement in efficiency and luxury is just around the corner.  All you need is a little grease, a wrench or two, a brain that runs on diesel, and a patent of course!

:The type of Hurt the weapon inflicts.  Either Slashing, Bludgeoning, or Piercing.  Certain spells, items and armor protect better against certain types of Hurt.  Bludgeoning weapons can be used to knock targets unconscious instead of killing them when they reach 0 HP.  Slashing and piercing weapons can be used to deliver toxins, tainted damage, poisons and disease, since they are made to cut into the target.  Most bludgeoning weapons can only deliver these maladies if they can be spread through simple contact.

Melee
 +
For most people, keeping trouble at arms length is vastly preferable to letting it within striking distance, but if things go fist-city, it's nice to have an edge: a really sharp edge.  Melee weapons can only be used against adjacent enemies.

βˆ’
Weapons marked with a (†) must be held with two hands.
+
Older Stuff
 +
In some areas of the world, technology is limited or dated and the weapons available are primitive.  In others, the Old Ways are clung to in the hope that they will prove a salvation, and those who practice the Old Ways use some old weaponry.  In still other places, antiquated weapons are a mark of status or valor and aren't used as much as they are just worn or displayed.  Still, when the hurly-burly starts, any weapon is better than none.  The weapons that follow aren't at the forefront of weapons technology, but at least they are widely available.

* Ace – An ace is another term for dagger.  Daggers and knives are the most inexpensive and prevalent weapon among the common people: most people have them in their kitchens, if nowhere else.  Ace can also refer to a bayonet (see below).
 +
* Strongblade – Swords are a bit antiquated, but there are still some cultures trained in the arts of using them.  Strongblades run the gamut from longswords to rapiers, broadswords to battle-axes, katana to cutlasses.
 +
* Big Chopper – When it comes to bringing a knife to a gunfight, you had better make sure it's a really big knife.  Big choppers require two hands to use and are often 6–7 feet in length.
 +
* Blackjack – A common term for any small, blunt object that is used to club an opponent.  Blackjacks are cheap, easy to obtain, and easy to conceal.  The weapon of choice for street muggers and kidnappers.
 +
* Queensrod – Anything from a baseball bat to a mace, a broom-handle to a hammer.  Light enough to use with one hand, but with length and mass enough to knock someone's block off.
 +
* Gatecrasher – Gatecrashers are weighted bludgeons which are heavy enough to require two hands to swing around effectively, like sledgehammers, fenceposts, and stout chairs.
 +
*Pigsticker – A long, bladed polearm used to keep animals and people at a good distance.  Unlike other melee weapons, a spear can be used to attack enemies who are not adjacent to you, but still close enough to be struck.  Spears can also be used to defend against a charge in such a way as to potentially deal damage to the attacker if the charge is poorly executed.
 +

 +
Modding Older Stuff
 +
* Cheap – a cheap weapon can be purchased at half-price, but since it is made from sub-standard materials, the weapon breaks on a crit-fail and is thereafter useless.
 +
* Sickstick – A bludgeoning weapon outfitted with sickstick technology will make a target nauseous and dizzy on a successful attack.  Weapon becomes a stun weapon.
 +
* Tenebran Steel Blades – Any blade made with Tenebran Steel adds +1 to the Hurt score of the weapon.
 +

 +

* Aether Torch – A short handle which is capable of producing a super-heated column of flame from one or both ends which is hot enough to melt through steel.  The flame may be shortened or lengthened, but has a maximum length approaching six feet.  Dangerous to use, even by proficient handlers, aether torches have been known to explode.  Aether torches require cells of compressed Aether gas.
 +
* Arcblade – A sword or other bladed weapon which is imbued with electrical energy in the same way as an Arcglove.  Requires arcgloves to handle safely.  Powered by a mana cell.
 +
* Arcglove – A gauntlet which generates a flow of electricity along and around it, which can be discharged during hand-to-hand fighting, shocking the opponent.  When not generating the normal field of electricity, arcgloves give off a "tingle" to those in contact with them.  Powered by a mana cell.
 +
* Ki-blade – Weapons of legend, rumored to hold within them the soul of a dead kensai.  When held by a Kensai, a ki-blade allows the wielder to charge it with "ki," or spirit energy, which greatly increases the weapon's deadliness.  Ki-blades are also sought after as antiques/museus pieces, and so some of them are not in service, but still very functional.
 +
* Sawbracers – Leather bracers reinforced with metal which conceal several small, serrated blades which tear at an opponent in hand-to-hand combat.
 +
* Shiversword – A weapon consisting of a pair of thin blades which move back and forth at very high speeds, causing the weapon to "shiver."  This movement of the blades means the cutting edge is extremely sharp.  Friction or debris causes the weapon to seize up, or "jam," on a critical failure.  Shiverswords come in all sizes and are commonly used in cooking or as work tools, in the form of small knives.
 +
* Springstaff – A springstaff resembles a short, thick metal rod in appearance, measuring 12" long at most.  By pressing a button, the springs inside the handle eject lengths hidden one inside the other, turning the weapon into a full-length staff of up to seven feet. The new length of the weapon is fixed until the button is pressed again, which allows the shaft to collapse.
 +
 +
Special Melee Weapons and Critical Failures
 +
Because of the advanced and imperfect technology used to create and operate advanced melee weapons, on critical failures, these weapons behave oddly.  If the result is a 4-10, the attack misses, but no other malfunction is incurred.  On a 1-3, the weapon malfunctions as described below, as per its individual qualities.
 +
 +
* Blade Jam – Shiverswords which malfunction have their mechanisms or blades jam or fuse together.  It takes 4AP to get the weapon working again, which usually involves just smacking the thing until it works.
 +
 +
* Blowback – A Springstaff which malfunctions hits its wielder with a force pulse, knocking them prone.
 +
 +
* Incendiary Explosion – A malfunction with an Aether Torch means that the dangerous aether and plasma gases which power the torch explode, destroying the weapon and injuring the wielder (Grunt Save DL 25).
 +
 +
* Shorting – Arcblades and arcgloves will short-circuit on a malfunction.  The electrical energy breaks the circuit and will not flow through the weapon.  The device must be repaired with an on-the-spot Machinery check (5 AP, DL 15).  Until they are repaired, arcblades function like swords of their respective size and arcgloves function as if the wearer was bare-fisted (a little warmer, though).  If the Machinery check to repair a shorted weapon crit-fails, the wielder is struck by an arc of electrical energy (Grunt Save DL 20), regardless of any arc diffusers worn.
 +
 +
Modding Special Melee Weapons
 +
* Aether Wither – A small device which is synced with an Aether Torch to cause it to shut off the moment it leaves its wielder's hands, preventing any collateral damage it might incur such as lighting nearby objects or persons on fire.  Aether withers can also be synced in such a way as to disallow the torch linked to it to be used by other parties until the link can be disabled (Machinery DL 18, 4 AP).
 +
* Auto-Fuse – Prevents the first short of any combat with an arcing weapon.
 +
* Sickstick – A springstaff outfitted with sickstick technology will make a target nauseous and dizzy on a successful attack.  Weapon becomes a stun weapon.
 +
* Soulstone – Adding additional soulstones to a ki-blade greatly enhance their destructive capabilities.  Each additional soulstone doubles the effects of channeling ki into the weapon.
 +
* Tenebran Steel Blades – Any blade (including shiverswords and arcblades) made with Tenebran Steel adds +1 to the Hurt score of the weapon.
 +
* Tetron Coating – Tetron coating is applied to items which incorporate moving parts which may cause friction, heat, and heavy wear-and-tear.  The Tetron prevents friction and assures less malfunctions and longer life for the item.  Shiverswords coated with Tetron never jam.
 +
* Weapon Oil – Prevents the first blade jam of any combat with a shiversword.
 +
 +
Firearms
 +
Firearms is a general term for things that go bang!  Firearms are ranged weapons which require no physical strength to operate, but instead fire projectiles at high velocity at targets.  Firearms are also called guns, blasters, shooters, and gats.

Armor
+
* Pistols - A pistol is a firearm which can be used in one hand.
βˆ’
* Aether Wither
+
* Rifles - A rifle is any gun which normally requires two-hands to shoot.  Most rifles are best fired from the shoulder and have a buttstock.
βˆ’
* Arc Diffuser
+

βˆ’
* Arc Shield
+
Firearms and Critical Failures
βˆ’
* Infantry Light Armor
+
Because of the complexity of a firearm's internal workings and the fact that most cartridges contain explosives, propellants, chemicals, or other volatile materials, malfunctioning firearms can be more disastrous than having a bad day with a sword.  Whenever a player rolls a crit-fail for an Attack which uses a firearm, consult the table below.
βˆ’
* Mariner Light Armor
+

βˆ’
* Night-guard Light Armor
+
* (6-10) Miss - Automatic miss, loss of ammo.
βˆ’
* Night-guard Heavy Armor
+
* (5) Oops - The character drops the firearm.  Requires 2 AP to retrieve.
βˆ’
* Spellgloves
+
* (4) Jam - The ammunition does not load properly into the chamber as the magazine or cell is clogged with dirt.  Requires a reload.
 +
* (3) Dud - The ammunition loads into the chamber, but does not fire.  The cartridge must be carefully removed with a Machinery check (5 AP, DL 15).
 +
* (2) Hangfire - There is a short lag between pulling the trigger and ejection of the projectile.  The weapon targets the closest ally as the firearm fires at an inopportune time.
 +
* (1) Explosion - A squib, a cartridge which is improperly prepared, or a gun with a faulty barrel will cause the gun to be blown apart, destroying the gun and injuring the wielder (Grunt Save DL 20).
 +

 +
Modding Firearms
 +
Firearms and their ammunition can be modified in a number of ways.
 +

 +
* Barrel Upgrade – Can be taken up to three times.  Increases the Hurt of the weapon by one.
 +
* Bayonet – A blade which is attached to rifles, turning them into formidable melee weapons.
 +
* Capacity Upgrade – Increases the magazine capacity by one.  Can be taken to a maximum capacity of 10.
 +
* Cheap – Weapon is available at half-price.  On a crit-fail, the weapon always explodes.
 +
* Collapsible – While every firearm can be dismantled for the purposes of maintenance and repair, a collapsible weapon is one which allows the main components to be easily taken apart for ease of concealment/smuggling, in order to be put together later.  Available only on rifles.
 +
* Grenade Launcher – An under-mounted launcher available on rifles which has its own trigger system and must be reloaded after every shot (4 AP).
 +
* Laser-tracking sight – Called shots can be made at no penalty.
 +
* Scope – Weapon may be fired at max range at no penalty.
 +
* Suppressor – Mutes the sound and dims the flash of gunfire.  Perception checks to notice suppressed gunfire is DL 25 (non-suppressed is usually DL 10).  Pistol suppressors limit effective range to 30 feet.
 +
* Tenebran Steel – Firearms made from this extremely resilient and expensive alloy are never destroyed as a result of a crit-fail.  Instead, they are simply disabled.  A firearm cannot be made of Tenebran Steel and also be Cheap.

βˆ’
Gear
+
Ammunition
βˆ’
* Aether Cell
+
* Flashy Ammo – Blinds foes adjacent to wielder (Grunt Save DL 12).
βˆ’

* Ace – An ace is another term for dagger.  Daggers and knives are the most inexpensive and prevalent weapon among the common people.
+
* Lupo Shotgun – A short-handled shotgun without a buttstock, the Lupo's shortened, upgraded barrel (+2 Hurt) functions more like a pistol than a rifle due to its ability to be easily handled one-handedThe knockdown ability of shotgun models is retained in the Lupo, making it a great close-quarters weapon and widely used as a self-defense weapon by wary citizens and ruthless bodyguards.
βˆ’
* Aether Torch – A short handle which is capable of producing a tall, super-heated flame from one or both ends which is hot enough to melt through steel.  The flame may be shortened or lengthened, but has a maximum length approaching six feet.  Dangerous to use, even by proficient handlers, aether torches have been known to explode.

βˆ’
* Arcblade – A sword or other bladed weapon which is imbued with electrical energy in the same way as an Arcglove.  Requires arcgloves to handle safely.  Powered by a mana cell.

βˆ’
* Arcglove – A gauntlet which generates a flow of electricity along and around it, which can be discharged during hand-to-hand fighting, shocking the opponent. Powored by a mana cell.

βˆ’
* Arcgun – A gun which shoots arcs of condensed electricity at short ranges. Powered by a mana cell.

βˆ’
* "Avenger" Revolver – A handgun with a revolving block consisting of six chambers.  Great stopping power, but the shooter is frequently required to reload.

βˆ’
* Chillcubes – Grenades which discharge a chemical gas which freezes water and chills the air, causing damage to anyone caught in its path.

βˆ’
* Dessication Grenades – Grenades which radiate micro-waves, stealing the moisture from the bodies of those nearby and causing internal organ damage.

βˆ’
* Gunblade – Similar to a bayonet, this is a long blade which can be attached to some firearms, enabling their use as a formidable melee weapon"Gunblade" is both the term for the blade, and the assembled weapon itself.  Not all guns allow for the attachment of a gunblade.

βˆ’
* Ki-blade – Weapons of legend, rumored to hold within them the soul of a dead kensai.  When held by a Kensai, a ki-blade allows the wielder to charge it with "ki," or spirit energy, which greatly increases the weapon's deadliness.

βˆ’
* Red Dragon Rifle – A large gun which shoots flames via the muzzle fed by a cannister of highly-flammable, ultra-condensed gas attached to the gun like a magazine.

βˆ’
* Sawbracers – Leather bracers reinforced with metal which conceal several small, serrated blades which tear at an opponent in hand-to-hand combat.

βˆ’
* Shiversword – A weapon consisting of a pair of thin blades which move back and forth at very high speeds, causing the weapon to "shiver."  This movement of the blades means the cutting edge is extremely sharp.

βˆ’
* Shiverswords come in all sizes and are commonly used in cooking or as work tools, in the form of knives.

βˆ’
* "Speakeasy"  – An automatic handgun with less stopping power than a revolver that can nonetheless be fired more quickly.

βˆ’
* Springblade – An unextended springblade resembles a shortsword with a long handle, which sometimes make them rather conspicuous.  By pressing a button, the springs inside the handle eject lengths hidden one inside the other, turning the weapon into a spear.  The new length of the weapon is fixed until the button is pressed again, which allows the shaft to collapse.

βˆ’
* Springstaff – A springstaff functions just like a bladeless springsword, and resembles a short metal rod in appearance.

βˆ’
* Thumpgun – These guns, when fired, produce a single sonic pulse which is inaudible to humanoid ears, but has concussive force enough to knock targets off their feet and hurt them.  Thumpguns are commonly used by bounty hunters, and law enforcement, as well as those who wish to trade lethal effect for discretion.

βˆ’
* Trowlish Thundermaker – A larger, very powerful version of the revolver crafted by the Trowls with a Trowl's size and strength in mind. The Thundermaker has 8 chambers in its revolving block.  When fired, the noise and kickback are immense.  Anyone with a Muscle score of less than 6 firing a Thundermaker takes a -8 penalty on attacks with it.  Anyone smaller than a Trowl must use the weapon with two hands.

βˆ’
*Arcshield

* Magpie Pocket Pistol – The Magpie has a very low capacity of 4 shots, and may not be fitted with a suppressor, but is very inexpensiveMost often used for personal safety reasonsMagpie's are Reliable.
βˆ’
*Arc Collar – Packmasters attach these collars to the necks, or rarely wrists/ankles, of prisoners, laborers, slaves, or enemies.  The packmaster can remotely activate the collar, which sends a shock into the body of the host.  Arc collars are often used to "train" captives and are sometimes used in conjunction with Mana Inhibitor Collars (M.I.C.).

βˆ’
*Bloodbook – Relics of the Old Ways, a set of bloodbooks were a way of communicating over long distances.  What was written in blood in one book could be read in either all the books or in a single master tome, depending on how the books were enchanted.  Since the advent of radio communications, bloodbooks have slightly decreased in value, but due to their easily-disguised nature, they are still utilized.

βˆ’
*Combustion Collar – Barbaric devises still in use by ruthless cultures and slavers, these collars attach to their hosts and remain there until removed by a trained packmasterThe packmaster may activate the collar, at which time it explodes, obviously killing the host and killing or wounding anyone nearby.  Any attempt to remove the collar through force results in immediate activation.

βˆ’
*Focus Magnet – A Focus Magnet is a pucklike stone which can be used to push (diamagnetism) or pull (paramagnetism) metal objects through the expenditure of MP.

βˆ’
*Dreamstones

βˆ’
*Mana Inhibitor Collar – Less gruesome than the combustion collar, the M.I.C. continually drains the Mana energy inherent to the host, stopping it from activating any powers, preventing it from casting spells, and keeping it in a state of mild exhaustion.  These collars keep a host at a constant state of 0 MP and Stage One on the Knockout Track.

* Hammersmith 2000 – The Hammersmith is manufactured with specialized infantry forces in mind: the kind which need to blow things up as well as blow them away.  The Hammersmith comes standard with a grenade launcher and improved barrel (+1 Hurt).  Hammersmiths cannot be made collapsible and cannot be outfitted with a bayonet.

 +
Heavy Rifles
 +
* C&G Shotgun – The Coach and Gable shotgun is a standard amongst hunters, farmers, and anyone who likes to squint down 18" of cold, double-barreled steel at their disheartened enemies.  C&G has been a household name in firearms since the inception of the shotgun and the design has changed very little since its origins.  The C&G is made of Tenebran Steel, making it a durable weapon one could eventually pass on to a younger generation.

 +
* Pallbearer Sniper Rifle – For when one shot needs to take down the biggest, baddest goon you've ever seen through a scope.  The Pallbearer boasts a heavily upgraded barrel (+3 Hurt), a scope, a laser-tracking sight, and suppressor.  In addition, the Pallbearer's monstrous frame is collapsible, making it easy to smuggle just about anywhere, and because of the bolt-action loading mechanism, the Pallbearer is Reliable.  Some models are even special ordered in Tenebran Steel, since some people love their Pallbearer more than their own mothers.

βˆ’
Blades
+
* Falke Cβˆ’670 Destroyer βˆ’ When it comes to tearing apart your enemies' morale within the first few shots of an engagement, there is no gun better than the Falke Cβˆ’670.  The superbly crafted revolving barrel (+4 Hurt) is a breakthrough in weapons technology.  The huge 10 shot capacity only makes this weapon look better.  If there are indeed any drawbacks to this masterpiece of a weapon, they would be these: the weapon is incompatible with any other upgrades, besides being available in Tenebran Steel.  One might be counseled against voicing these concerns to someone carrying a Destroyer, though.  Just a word of advice.

βˆ’
* Dagger/Knife – A small weapon, with either one or two bladed edges. Useful as a backup in close-quarters combat. Less than 1 foot in length.
+
Special Firearms
βˆ’
* Main-Gauche – A small blade typically wielded in the off-hand adept at use in parrying and disarming.
+
These weapons rely on different methods than fired bullet-projectiles. Some require the use of a Manacell, an electro-chemical battery of sorts, or an Aethercell, a small can of highly condensed, pressurized gas.
βˆ’
* Stiletto/Poignard – A short, narrow knife used for stabbing deeply.

βˆ’
* Dirk/Combat Knife – Longer and sturdier than a typical dagger.

βˆ’
* Short Sword/Gladius – A thrusting sword with usually no longer than 2–3 feet.

βˆ’
* Longsword – Very popular among soldiers and infantry, usually around 4 feet in length. Mostly held in one hand.

βˆ’
* Broadsword – Wider than a longsword, slightly more primitive, between 3 and 4 feet in length.

βˆ’
* Bastard Sword – Also known as the hand-and-a-half sword. Can be held in one or two hands. When held in two hands, it provides more power and leverage to the wielder. Usually around 4–5 feet in length.

βˆ’
* Greatsword – An extremely large and powerful weapon. Must be held in two hands. Often up to 6–7 feet in length.

βˆ’
* Saber – A sturdy, single-bladed, curved sword with a hand guard. Often about 3 feet in length.

βˆ’
* Cutlass – Similar to a saber, with a basket-like hand guard. 2–3 feet in length, very popular amongst sailors.

βˆ’
* Rapier – A noble and graceful sword, mostly used for fencing and piercing, up to 3–4 feet in length.

βˆ’
* Scimitar – A curved blade usually without a hand guard. 2–4 feet in length.

βˆ’
* Double Sword – Two sword blades mounted into a handle in the center. The entire sword can be between 5–6 feet in length.

βˆ’
* Throwing Axe – A simple axe useful for hand-to-hand, but primarily adept at being thrown. Usually less than 2 feet in length.
+
* Arc-gun – A gun which shoots arcs of condensed electricity at short ranges. Powered by a mana cell.
βˆ’
* Hatchet/Hand Axe – Slightly bigger than a throwing axe, with a flat end of the head that can be used as a hammer.
+
* Arc-lash – An arc-lash is a weapon reminiscent of a bullwhip: lightning fast and flexible.  An arc-lash functions in most ways like a ranged weapon: it can't be parried by anything other than a shield, but an arc-lash's capacity is infinite.  An arclash can also entangle an opponent (see the rules for Entanglement in the Combat chapter).  A character attacking with an arc-lash may add their Muscle score to the Attack Roll.
βˆ’
* Berserker Axe – Made with a solid wooden shaft and a curved axe head.
+
* Flamethrower – A large rifle which shoots flames via the muzzle.  The flames are fueled by a cannister of highly-flammable, ultra-condensed Aether gas attached to the gun like a magazine.
βˆ’
* War Axe – The axe-head is curved on one side, and blunt on the other, with a long shaft of wood or metal held in two hands.
+
* Grappling Gun – A pistol which shoots small, barbed metal hooks, called "grapplers," attached to a length of cord.  The hooks penetrate or grip stone, earth, steel and most other substances besides Tenebran Steel.  The wielder can then use the attached cord to climb.  The gun features a self-locking winch which aids in ascension, but the winch and grappler can only hold one non-Obese character without detaching.
βˆ’
* Executioner/Great Axe – Massive, heavy axe, with a dual-bladed axe head.
+
* Thumpgun – These guns, which can be handled with one hand or two, are larger than a pistol, but smaller than a rifle.  When fired, Thumpguns produce a single sonic pulse which is barely audible to humanoid ears, but has concussive force enough to knock targets off their feet and hurt them.  Thumpguns are commonly used by bounty hunters, and law enforcement, as well as those who wish to trade lethal effect for discretion or live quarry.  Thumpguns also have large capacities, making reloading a minimal hassle.
βˆ’
* Axe Spike – Can be affixed to the top of the axe head to be used in thrusting.
+

βˆ’
* Pickaxe – Typically a tool used for mining and digging, but also used in combat.
+
Because of the advanced and imperfect technology used to create and operate advanced melee weapons, on critical failures, these weapons behave oddly. If the result is a 4-10, the attack misses, but no other malfunction is incurred. On a 1-3, the weapon malfunctions as described below, as per its individual qualities.
βˆ’
* Double Axe – A rare weapon consisting of a central haft with an axe-head at each end.
+

 +

 +
* Shorting – Arcguns will short-circuit on a malfunction.

 +
* Bloodwood and Horn - Hunting bows reinforced with Bloodwood and Negoromi Horn are extremely flexible, enabling greater resilience without reducing the draw of the bowstring (becomes AP 4 weapon).
 +
* Spidercord - Bows and crossbows modified with Spidercord will never have a bowstring snap, and so crit-fails with Spidercord bows simply miss.  Spidercord used in climbing can support the weight of as many people as needed and is nearly impossible to cut through.
 +
* Tombwood and Horn - Hunting bows reinforced with this hard, sturdy wood and the horn of Ushi-oni stand up well to strong draws (+1 Hurt).
 +

 +
Other Ammunition
 +
* Incendiary Arrows - Light a target on fire on a hit.
 +
* Explosive Arrows - These arrows explode on impact, dealing damage to nearby targets.
 +
* Poisons - These projectiles have been dipped in poison of some sort (see the entries on Poisons for more details).  Because of the complexity of firearms and the fact that bullets are encased in a cartridge, firearm ammunition cannot be poisoned.  Neither can weapons which rely on a Manacell or Aethercell.  However, arrows, bolts, and shuriken can.
 +
* Netcaster - On a successful hit, the target is ensnared in a net.  Usable with crossbows only.
 +
* Bolacaster - A pair of small metal orbs connected with a wire, which is fired at the legs of a target.  On a successful hit, the target is knocked prone and is considered entangled.  Usable with crossbows only.

βˆ’
* Lance – Really only effective when used in mounted combat. Devastating at full gallop, but slow to ready. Usually between 6–12 feet in length.

* Hand-to-hand – Your bare fists. You want a description? Look at 'em!
+
* Light infantry shield – A simple shield with metal rivets and reinforcements, commonly strapped to the arm. Useful in melee combat as a bludgeoning weapon.
βˆ’
* Sap – A small club consisting of leather-wrapped lead. Known for easy concealment.
+
* Heavy infantry shield – A large shieldβ€Šβ€”β€Šlarge enough to cover nearly from the shoulders to the knees. Often rectangular, made of metal, polycarbonate, or other resistant material. Its weight makes it particularly effective as a bludgeoning weapon, and shields can be used to knock an opponent backwards or prone.
βˆ’
* Wooden Club – A hunk of hard wood held in one hand. Sometimes found with simple metal reinforcements or spikes.
+
* Arc Shield – An arc shield is a light shield that has been modified to carry an electrical current across the face of it.  When attacking with an arc shield, the field can be discharged into an opponent, shocking them. When defending, the shield's energy will arc at the attacker on a critically-successful parry roll, where the attacker takes the damage, not the defender.  Arcshields require arcgloves to use without self-harm.
βˆ’
* War hammer – A hand-held weapon with a metal head created to battle armored foes. Often a spike is found on the reverse side of the head.
+

βˆ’
* Mace – A single-handed weapon with a heavy metal head on a sturdy wooden or metal handle.
+
Armor
βˆ’
* Edged Mace – A mace with a flanged or edged head, useful for deeper impact during a swing.
+
Good armor is hard to come by and many don't bother with it unless they know they are headed for trouble. Armor is most commonly seen in the hands of soldiers, law enforcement, and persons of political importHowever, as it often means the difference between life and death, all of those who do wear it are eventually thankful for having it.
βˆ’
* Morning star – A mace with metal spikes of differing size protruding from the head.
+

βˆ’
* Ball and chain – A solid metal weight attached to a lengthy chainSometimes these are available with a weight at each end.
+
;Bonus
βˆ’
* Quarterstaff – A long wooden pole, typically taller than the wielder. Crude versions can be found in forested areas, but more sophisticated versions are crafted.
+
:This is the number you add to Defense Rolls and record in the "Armor" box on the character sheet
βˆ’
* Sledgehammer – A two-handed hammer with a heavy head on one end and a wooden haft up to 3 feet in length.
+
;Hindrance
βˆ’
* Flail – A two-handed handle with a chain connected to a solid metal spiked ball. Opponents have difficulty parrying swings from this weapon.
+
:The penalty imposed to certain rolls
βˆ’
* Maul – A two-handed hammer with a large metal head, similar to a sledgehammer, but capable of more powerful impacts.

βˆ’
* Blowgun – The ammunition from a blowgun doesn't cause much damage, but is an effective way to deliver poisons, nerve agents, and other toxins.
+
Simple Armor
βˆ’
* Dart – A small, heavy projectile with fletching on the tail and a narrow pointed end. Too short to be used as ammunition in a bow.
+
* Ballistic Vest – A very basic protective vest available on the civilian market.
βˆ’
* Shuriken – Small, pointed object with sharpened tips. Either straight or star-like. Can be used as a stabbing weapon also.
+

βˆ’
* Throwing knife – A knife, different from a typical dagger in that it is weighted and designed for throwing.
+
Good Armor
βˆ’
* Boomerang – A masterfully-crafted, bent, flat, wooden stick capable of rotating at high speed and great lengths. A mundane boomerang will not return if it impacts a target.
+
* Infantry Light Armor – Typical standard issue armor for infantry soldiers the world over.
βˆ’
* Chakram – A circular, flat, metal ring with a bladed edge that can be thrown between 100–300 feet.
+

βˆ’
* Sling – A leather or rope corded weapon which can be loaded with blunt objects, such as stones, and hurled at targets.
+
* Stealthsuit – A full body suit with night-vision goggles and armor plating.  The suit automatically camouflages itself to blend in with surroundings.  The Stealthsuit grants a +2 bonus on Stealth checks.
βˆ’
* Short Bow – A curved limb typically made of wood with a tense string. Made for launching narrow, fletched arrows.
+

βˆ’
* Longbow – Similar to a short bow, but nearly as tall as the person who wields it. These are capable of launching arrows with startling force.
+
* Zjenithi Carapace Armor – Designed ages ago by the Zjenithi, this armor utilizes interlocking chitinous plates.  This armor a +2 bonus on Defense Rolls versus attacks which utilize fire, such as Aether Torches, Flamethrowers, and Incendiary Grenades.
βˆ’
* Crossbow – A bow mounted horizontally on a wooden stock. A high-tension bow string delivers around the same punch as a longbow in a smaller size. Typically reloaded with a pull or push lever.
+

βˆ’
* Repeating Crossbow – A crossbow with a mechanism to string the bow, load the bolt, and fire it in one motion. Each cartridge loaded into the bow contains 4 bolts.
+
Great Armor
βˆ’
* Hand Crossbow – A tiny crossbow, capable of being held in one hand. Bolts for this crossbow are much smaller than standard bolts.
+
* Mariner Light Armor – An insulated, waterproof suit of armor reinforced, pressure-resistant materials, allowing deep-sea exploration and naval tactics.  Comes standard with an UCA.
βˆ’
* Heavy Crossbow – A very large crossbow with a metal draw string. Has a crank to be used for reloading. This crossbow hits with a sickeningly massive force.
+

βˆ’
* Flint Pistol – A hand-held firearm usually used in self-defense or duels. Popular in conjunction with another weapon.
+
* Night-guard Light Armor – A less expensive, less intricate version of the Night-guard Heavy Armor originally designed for paratroopers, this armor is also made of Tenebran Steel plates and Spidersteel threading, but covers only the most vital areas of the soldier's body.
βˆ’
* Flint Rifle – A long firearm held in two hands capable of precision and range.
+

βˆ’
* Repeater Pistol – A semi-automatic hand-held firearm which is capable of firing a round, reloading, and readying for the next shot for each pull of the trigger.
+
Superior Armor
 +
* Night-guard Heavy Armor – The preferred armor of the Iron Legion, night-guard heavy armor turns the common soldier into a one-man tank.  Made with Tenebran Steel and Spidersteel, this suit of armor features a full-enclosure helmet and total body-coverage which does not slow or encumber the soldier.  A comlink and voxbox are built into the design of the armor as well as an UCA for use in amphibious missions.  Jump propulsion backpack and stabilizers enable the NGHA-outfitted soldier to drop into enemy territory or crash into enemy lines.  The armor is engraved with warding runes, further defying enemy soldiers.  Just the sight of the NGH-armored soldier is enough to bolster faltering allies and strike terror and disorder into enemy ranks.
 +

 +
* Symbiont Armor – A symbiont is a very primitive living creature which is applied to a person in order to grant the person protective qualities.  The symbiont is resilient to attacks, very flexible, and quite fluid.  The symbiont is worn until it is removed, which, in the case of most symbionts, is not usually difficult. The symbiont feeds off of the heat released by those wearing them, converting it to the energy it needs to live.  A person wearing a symbiont resembles someone clad in a form-fitting black rubber bodysuit.
 +

 +
Modding Armor
 +
* Arc Diffusers – An arc deflector is a small device which acts to divert arcs of electrical energy originating from a synced arcing weapon away from the wearer.Grants the wearer a +2 bonus on Defense Rolls against an opponents arcing weapon and makes the wearer immune from any erratic arcs coming from a comrade's weapon.
 +
* Spidersteel – This bio-engineered material is made from the silk of certain large spiders, and possesses extreme durability and elasticity.  Armor made from threads and plates of spidersteel negates the hindrance penalties by one.
 +
* Tenebran Steel – Armor made with Tenebran Steel grants an additional +1 to the armor score of the item.
 +
* Warding Runes – A secret possessed by a scant few who still practice the Old Ways, Warding Runes function like a shield, deflecting projectiles away from the wearer. The runes grant the wearer a +2 to parry ranged attacks as if the wearer was using a shield, but allowing the use of both hands.  A further shield can be used as well, for increased deflection, but this contradicts the purpose of the runes: to free the hands.
 +

 +
Food/Drink
 +
* Amrita – A liquor made from honey, rare spices and herbs, and Mana.  The true recipe is ancient, dating back thousands of years, and some cultures propose their recipe has not changed in all that time (+4 MP).
 +
* Ambrosia – Because of its status as an anti-toxin, it is the preferred drink to consume among dangerous or mixed company or in strange countries (+2 Saves vs. Poison).
 +
* Edge – Most people prefer to smoke their Edge, as the commonly held assumption is that alcohol interferes with the heightened senses Edge provides, but some have been known to drink it.  In this form Edge tastes of bitter almonds, and is slightly less potent than its other forms (+1 Perception, +1 Focus).
 +
* Harma – A mild drink made from the juices pressed from the Harmonium plant, Harma is praised for its ability to calm the senses and nerves without inducing fuzziness of memory or loss of motor function (+2 SP).  The seeds of the Harma plant can also be dried and burned as incense, and its effects enjoyed that way.  It is often found burning in the homes of healers and in places of worship or mysticism. Harma which is made with high concentrations of Harmonium nectar can have a hallucinogenic effect.
 +
* Ichor – A thick, dark drink which has a taste reminiscent of licorice or molasses.  Ichor is made with small amounts of Ushioni blood, which lead some to abstain from consuming it on moral grounds.  Ichor is proven to be a great preventative to many diseases (+4 to resisting or overcoming disease).
 +
* Lucy – With a strong taste which is almost sour, Lucy is notorious for making drinkers loud and hostile, and contributing to many hangovers and next-day apologies.  Lucy contains several ingredients which make the drinker slightly paranoid and irritable (+2 Reaction).  In moderation, quite enjoyable; in excess, rather terrible.
 +
* Poitine – Possibly the most potent of any alcoholic drink in production, poitine enjoys a status which meanders back and forth across the borders of legality in most places.  Drinking poitine is considered a rite of passage in some cultures. Poitine contains several analgesics, which relieve pain (+2 Endurance).
 +
* Reptis Bloodwine – Made by draining the blood of a juvenile reptis and mixing it with strong liquor and other herbal ingredients, the concoction takes a rosy hue.  Most bottles of reptis bloodwine are strangely shaped and the reptis is often found whole inside.  Reptis Bloodwine is sweet and very pleasant smelling.  In fact, the scent of it is enough to arouse not just drinkers, but anyone nearby (+2 Seduce).
 +
* Soma – Rumored to be made from concentrated prayer and worship of the old gods, this liquor is combined with the milk of Kirin and rosewater, making it sweet, thick, and smooth.  (Doubles overnight healing, but induces deep sleep and vivid dreams).
 +
* Teikal – A robust, smoky-tasting liquor, pale yellow to amber in color.  Teikal affects the parts of the brain which control basic fight-or-flight responses and fear, numbing these urges and as a result, is greatly preferred by soldiers (+2 Courage). Liquid courage, indeed.
 +

 +
Mechanical Augmentation
 +
Tin Limbs and Clockwork Organs
 +
* Tin Limb - A mechanical arm or leg used as a highly-effective prosthesis.  Some tin limbs are crude in nature, with gears exposed, others are more refined, housed in a resistant casing, and still others employ synthetic flesh and musculature to imitate a real limb. A tin limb isn't actually made of tin; that's just the name.  A single tin limb adds +1 to the character's natural armor score and enables the use of a missing limb.  Some people opt to have healthy, working limbs amputated and replaced by tin limbs in order to benefit from the limb's increased durability.
 +
* Tin Plates -
 +
* Tin Lungs - Allows the character to breathe normally underwater or in environments with noxious gases/fumes.
 +
* Tin Liver - Makes the character immune to poison.
 +
* Tin Heart - Allows a character killed during combat to continue acting as normal until the end of combat.
 +
* Tin Stomach - Doubles the effectiveness of augmentative food and drink.
 +
* Tin Hands - Gives a character +1 H2H Hurt
 +
* Tin Legs - Gives a character +2 to skill checks which involve running or jumping.
 +

 +
* Eyeshine - Many animals have a layer of tissue in their eyes called Tapetum Lucidum, which reflects visible light and greatly increases the quality of low-light and night-vision of these animals.  Called "eyeshine" because of the eerie, greenish reflections the eyes give off (most noticeably at night), a tapetum lucidum can be applied to humanoid eyes by a trained ocular surgeon.  Eyeshine negates the penalties to Perception and other sight-based checks at night and in areas of low-light and enables the character to see in what others would describe as "complete darkness."
 +
* Handcannon - A handcannon is a large firearm which is constructed to fit inside of a tin arm.  The barrel of the gun exits in the palm.  The handcannon is linked to the muscle and complex internal mechanisms of the tin arm and requires training in order to operate safely and effectively.  When the fingers of the hand are curled into a fist, the gun is considered to be on "safety" and will not fire.

Vehicles
 +
In an age where technology is in high demand, one need look no further than their own street to glimpse the most prized and beloved piece of machinery most people own: their transportation.
 +
 +
Vehicle Combat
 +
While the primary purpose of a vehicle is transportation, vehicles can also be used as weapons.  Using a vehicle as a weapon costs 6 AP.  Consider the reckless car chase through the streets of the city as the drivers attempt to run each other off the road and the passengers exchange gunfire at each other.  Or perhaps you have tailed your nemesis to his hideout and while waiting for him to emerge, one of his lackeys shows up and starts walking across the street.  He is easy pickings for a crack driver like you, and the tires screech as you put the pedal to the medal and aim for him.  He pulls a gun and begins firing, but he hasn't got a shot: your car has bullet-resistant glass and is fully insured against collision...

 +

 +
If you are trying to ram another vehicle with the intent to disable/destroy it, the driver of the other vehicle makes a Vehicle Defense Roll.
 +

 +

 +

 +
In the case of using a car to attempt to strike a pedestrian, the Vehicle Attack Roll is opposed by a Dodge Defense Roll.  If you were wondering, vehicles cannot normally be parried.
 +

 +
When a person in (or on) a car wants to attack a passenger in another car, or if a pedestrian wants to attack a driver or passenger in a car (usually by shooting them), the attacker needs to make a called shot.
 +

 +
When shooting from inside a moving vehicle, the swerving and erratic movements of the vehicle will interfere with the attack.  Shooting from inside a moving vehicle takes a βˆ’4 penalty unless either the shot or the car is steadied. To steady a car, the driver makes a Machinery check (DL 12, 1 AP).  To steady an attack while in a car, the shooter makes an Agility + Weapon Skill roll (DL 12, 1 AP).
 +

 +
If a pedestrian or passenger wants to attack an opposing vehicle itself with the intent of disabling/destroying it, an Attack Roll is made which is opposed by a Vehicle Defense Roll.
 +

 +
Crashing
 +
When a vehicle is brought to 0 HP, it is considered destroyed.  If the car is still moving (it isn't stopped or parked, etc.) it crashes.  When a vehicle crashes, the passengers inside must make a Grunt Save against a DL determined by the vehicle or suffer the difference as damage.  After the crash, the car comes to a complete stop and any survivors can safely disembark.
 +

 +
Vehicle Chases
 +
Vehicles are also often used to flee from situations of danger or to chase down an intended target.  If a vehicle is being pursued, opposing Machinery checks are made by the drivers.  These checks happen once a round and are free (0 AP).  If the car attempting to flee successfully consecutively wins three of these checks, they have evaded and lost their pursuers.  A critical success by the quarry or a critical failure by the pursuers counts as two successes for the quarry.  During the time the chase is on, attacks can be made as necessary.
 +

 +
In the case of attempting to tail another vehicle whose passengers are unaware of your attentions, make an Intellect + Machinery check which will be opposed by a Cunning + Perception check.  This is modified by the tailing vehicle's profile score.

βˆ’
* Cestus/Knuckles – A metal or leather covering which is worn over the hand and/or knuckles and provides extra weight compared to a bare fist. This weapon uses the Hand-to-hand Weapon skill.

βˆ’
* Claws – A pair of metal bands worn around the fingers or hand which have on the back side 3–5 small, curved, metal blades, resembling the claws of a wild animal.

βˆ’
* Sai – A long, pointed, dagger-shaped metal baton with two short prongs stemming from the side. Used to trap and sometimes break larger blades.

βˆ’
* Kama/Hand Sickle – A farming tool that makes a decent improvised weapon. It consists of a short, metal handle from which extends a perpendicular curved blade.

βˆ’
* Kusari-gama (chain) – The chain portion of the Kusari-gama has a weighted ball at one end which can be used to strike opponents and wrap around limbs or weapons.

βˆ’
* Nunchaku – A pair of metal or wooden rods attached by a short chain. The nunchaku is a speedy weapon which can be used to grab and disarm opponents.

βˆ’
* Khopesh – A sort of hybrid of the sword and battle axe, around 2 feet in length. Features a standard sword hilt but a strangely curved blade. Only the outside curve of the blade is sharpened.

βˆ’
* Falchion – A two-handed sword with a long, single-edged, slightly-curved blade that is weighted at the far end, making it useful for chopping strikes similar to an axe. Typically around 4 feet in length.

βˆ’
* Katana – A masterfully crafted sword and status symbol. It has a slightly-curved blade and a single sharp edge. The hilt varies in length, but the blade itself is usually 28 inches long. When held in two hands, it provides more power and leverage to the wielder.

βˆ’
* Nodachi – A larger two-handed sword than the katana, and just as well-made. The entire sword including the handle is usually 5 feet in length.

* Padded Armor – Armor which is made of layered fabric, such as cotton, linen, or wool, and is usually quilted. Sometimes referred to as a gambeson or a jupon. Often padded armor is a single, long, garment with sleeves, that would partially cover the thighs.
+
Gear
βˆ’
* Leather Armor – Suits of leather armor are boiled and waxed. Leather is sturdy, won't rust, and allows more free movement than does heavier plate armor. A suit of leather armor would come with a cuirass to cover the torso, as well as bracers or vambrances to protect the forearms, cuisses to protect the thighs, and greaves to protect the shins. The armor components are fastened to the body by laces and hooks.

* Reinforced Leather Armor – Just like leather armor, but with riveted metal studs or plates attached to the leather. The added metal rivets don't add any additional movement restriction, but do slightly enhance the wearer's protection from attacks.

βˆ’
* Half-chain Armor – This armor is mostly leather with several parts reinforced beneath by chain mail. It is slightly bulkier than reinforced leather armor, but takes about the same amount of time to put on or remove.

βˆ’
* Breastplate – A piece of armor made of several interlocked plates that provides protection for the torso. Can be worn alone (only providing a +2 to defense), but usually accompanied by a suit of leather underneath.

βˆ’
* Chain mail – A chain shirt called a hauberk is knee-length mail which includes a coif covering the head. A suit of chain would also include chausses to cover the legs and also mail-reinforced gauntlets. Typically, one would wear a padded gambeson underneath the mail. Mail is heavier and more movement restricting than lighter armors.

βˆ’
* Scale Armor – Scale armor is constructed by affixing small, metal scales to a leather or cloth backing. A suit of scale armor includes a shirt that covers the torso down to the upper thighs and partially the arms. It would include a set of gauntlets, but no leg coverings. Scale armor is not as flexible as mail, but is cheaper to produce. A suit of scale is affixed by leather laces on the backing material.

βˆ’
* Heavy Chain – Similar to chain mail, but the links are far more tightly-knit, leaving less space for weapons to penetrate. Also, the rings are riveted, having small studs that give a greater rate of deflection against incoming blows.

βˆ’
* Half Plate – A suit of mail with metal plates affixed in certain vital locations. Poleyns strapped over the knees, metal cuisses strapped over the thighs, couters covering the elbows, pauldrons covering the shoulders, and a breastplate to cover the torso. A tasset is attached to the breastplate to cover the hips. This suit would also include gauntlets and greaves. Very restrictive to movement, but provides great protection.

βˆ’
* Field Plate – A finely-crafted suit of armor that is individually fitted to the wearer. Full suits of plate armor show status and lineage. Each piece of the armor is riveted and interlocked with another piece, providing total covering of the body from head to toe. A helmet with a visor would be included along with sabatons covering the feet and gauntlets for the hand. The pieces of armor are strapped to a layer of padded armor beneath. Field plate is heavy and restrictive, but very sturdy.

βˆ’

βˆ’
A combatant wearing armor with a score greater than 5 (being anything above breastplate) will take a minus to his or her Dodge skill in the Defense Roll.  A character wearing chain mail will take a βˆ’1, scale will take a βˆ’2 and so on.  The GM might also require that such an armored character would take this penalty to physical skill checks such as Climb, Swim, Athletics, Gymnastics, Sneak, and perhaps even Spot (if wearing a fully-enclosed helm).

βˆ’

βˆ’
Characters that use shields don't actually receive any sort of armor bonus.  Instead, they use the shield for parrying during their Defense Roll.

Any weapon which is purchased as Cheap is purchased as the base weapon with no upgrades or current modding.  Upgrades can later be applied to the weapon, but players should be careful about applying too many upgrades to a cheap weapon: a cheap weapon can never be made to be un-cheap, since it is the materials with which the weapon and/or its parts are made which makes it cheap.

Disabled vs Destroyed
When a weapon or vehicle becomes disabled, it requires repair.  When something is destroyed, no amount of repair will suffice to make it whole and operational again.

Latest revision as of 13:51, 3 June 2011

Part of the charm of Dieselpunk is in the gadgetry. In times of war, the fires of industry burn brightly, churning out materiel and advanced technology in a race to overwhelm and overcome the enemy. On the home front, companies endeavor to invent appliances, vehicles, and tools to make citizens' lives easier. Listed here are some of the technologies one might find in a Dieselpunk world. But don't stop here; the next big advancement in efficiency and luxury is just around the corner. All you need is a little grease, a wrench or two, a brain that runs on diesel, and a patent of course!

Weapons

A hotly contested area of interest, an edge in weapons technology can mean the difference between staggering defeat and effortless victory.

Action Points
This details the number of Action Points necessary to use the weapon.
Parry
The bonus or penalty the weapon grants the character on a Defense Roll when the weapon is used to parry an attack.
Hurt
The amount of damage the weapon does on its own, which is factored into the Attack Roll.
Capacity
In the case of weapons which require ammunition, this is the typical number of shots which can be fired before a reload is necessary.
Type
The type of Hurt the weapon inflicts.
Notes
Any relevant notes about the weapon.
Cost
The cost in crowns/sovereigns(𝕀) to buy the weapon in new condition crowns/sovereigns(𝕀). When selling a used weapon, a character can expect to get half this value in return.

Weapons marked with a (†) are fast weapons. These weapons are small or light and easy to conceal and grant a character a +2 bonus on Thievery/Disguise checks to conceal them.

Weapons marked with a (‑) are two-handed weapons. They must be held with both hands. Two handed weapons give a character a βˆ’4 penalty to Thievery/Disguise checks to conceal them.

Weapon Properties

Arcing
On a critical success when using this weapon, the energy jumps in an arc to a another target. Choose a second target and roll another Attack Roll.
Incendiary
On a successful attack, this weapon lights its targets on fire. On a critical failure, the weapon explodes, dealing damage to its wielder. Roll a Grunt Save (DL 25) and take the result as damage.
Knockdown
Due to heavy stopping power, these weapons knock targets down. On a critical success when using this weapon, the target is knocked prone. Frequently seen on shotguns.
Reliable
This weapon never malfunctions as a result of rolling a critical failure. Revolver-style pistols are famous for their reliability.
Stun
Targets hit by the weapon will act last in Reaction order in the next round.

Melee

For most people, keeping trouble at arms length is vastly preferable to letting it within striking distance, but if things go fist-city, it's nice to have an edge: a really sharp edge. Melee weapons can only be used against adjacent enemies.

Older Stuff

In some areas of the world, technology is limited or dated and the weapons available are primitive. In others, the Old Ways are clung to in the hope that they will prove a salvation, and those who practice the Old Ways use some old weaponry. In still other places, antiquated weapons are a mark of status or valor and aren't used as much as they are just worn or displayed. Still, when the hurly-burly starts, any weapon is better than none. The weapons that follow aren't at the forefront of weapons technology, but at least they are widely available.

Name AP Parry Hurt Type Notes Cost
Fast blade (Ace) † 3 βˆ’2 2 P, S 25𝕀
One-handed blade (Strongblade) 4 βˆ’1 5 P, S 𝕀
Two-handed blade ‑ (Big Mother) 5 0 8 P, S 𝕀
Fast bludgeon (Blackjack) † 3 βˆ’2 2 B 𝕀
One-handed bludgeon (Queensrod) 4 βˆ’1 5 B 𝕀
Two-handed bludgeon ‑ (Gatecrasher) 5 0 8 B 𝕀
Spear (Pigsticker) 4 0 5 P 𝕀
 • Ace – An ace is another term for dagger. Daggers and knives are the most inexpensive and prevalent weapon among the common people: most people have them in their kitchens, if nowhere else. Ace can also refer to a bayonet (see below).
 • Strongblade – Swords are a bit antiquated, but there are still some cultures trained in the arts of using them. Strongblades run the gamut from longswords to rapiers, broadswords to battle-axes, katana to cutlasses.
 • Big Chopper – When it comes to bringing a knife to a gunfight, you had better make sure it's a really big knife. Big choppers require two hands to use and are often 6–7 feet in length.
 • Blackjack – A common term for any small, blunt object that is used to club an opponent. Blackjacks are cheap, easy to obtain, and easy to conceal. The weapon of choice for street muggers and kidnappers.
 • Queensrod – Anything from a baseball bat to a mace, a broom-handle to a hammer. Light enough to use with one hand, but with length and mass enough to knock someone's block off.
 • Gatecrasher – Gatecrashers are weighted bludgeons which are heavy enough to require two hands to swing around effectively, like sledgehammers, fenceposts, and stout chairs.
 • Pigsticker – A long, bladed polearm used to keep animals and people at a good distance. Unlike other melee weapons, a spear can be used to attack enemies who are not adjacent to you, but still close enough to be struck. Spears can also be used to defend against a charge in such a way as to potentially deal damage to the attacker if the charge is poorly executed.

Modding Older Stuff

 • Cheap – a cheap weapon can be purchased at half-price, but since it is made from sub-standard materials, the weapon breaks on a crit-fail and is thereafter useless.
 • Sickstick – A bludgeoning weapon outfitted with sickstick technology will make a target nauseous and dizzy on a successful attack. Weapon becomes a stun weapon.
 • Tenebran Steel Blades – Any blade made with Tenebran Steel adds +1 to the Hurt score of the weapon.

Special Melee

For those who seek to tip the scales of war in their favor, or who just want a little flash and flair with their deadly weapons, the following weapons are the way to go, daddy-o.

Name AP Parry Hurt Type Notes Cost
Aether Torch 4 10 F +4 to Smash checks, incendiary 𝕀

Ki-blade 4 S, P 𝕀
Sawbracers † 3 +1 3 S Cannot be disarmed 𝕀
Shiversword small † 3 3 S, P Jams on a crit fail 𝕀
Shiversword 4 6 S, P Jams on a crit fail, requires power cell 𝕀
Shiversword, large ‑ 5 9 S, P Jams on a crit fail, 2 handed, requires power cell 𝕀
Springstaff 4 5 B knockdown, easy conceal 𝕀
 • Aether Torch – A short handle which is capable of producing a super-heated column of flame from one or both ends which is hot enough to melt through steel. The flame may be shortened or lengthened, but has a maximum length approaching six feet. Dangerous to use, even by proficient handlers, aether torches have been known to explode. Aether torches require cells of compressed Aether gas.
 • Arcblade – A sword or other bladed weapon which is imbued with electrical energy in the same way as an Arcglove. Requires arcgloves to handle safely. Powered by a mana cell.
 • Arcglove – A gauntlet which generates a flow of electricity along and around it, which can be discharged during hand-to-hand fighting, shocking the opponent. When not generating the normal field of electricity, arcgloves give off a "tingle" to those in contact with them. Powered by a mana cell.
 • Ki-blade – Weapons of legend, rumored to hold within them the soul of a dead kensai. When held by a Kensai, a ki-blade allows the wielder to charge it with "ki," or spirit energy, which greatly increases the weapon's deadliness. Ki-blades are also sought after as antiques/museus pieces, and so some of them are not in service, but still very functional.
 • Sawbracers – Leather bracers reinforced with metal which conceal several small, serrated blades which tear at an opponent in hand-to-hand combat.
 • Shiversword – A weapon consisting of a pair of thin blades which move back and forth at very high speeds, causing the weapon to "shiver." This movement of the blades means the cutting edge is extremely sharp. Friction or debris causes the weapon to seize up, or "jam," on a critical failure. Shiverswords come in all sizes and are commonly used in cooking or as work tools, in the form of small knives.
 • Springstaff – A springstaff resembles a short, thick metal rod in appearance, measuring 12" long at most. By pressing a button, the springs inside the handle eject lengths hidden one inside the other, turning the weapon into a full-length staff of up to seven feet. The new length of the weapon is fixed until the button is pressed again, which allows the shaft to collapse.

Special Melee Weapons and Critical Failures

Because of the advanced and imperfect technology used to create and operate advanced melee weapons, on critical failures, these weapons behave oddly. If the result is a 4-10, the attack misses, but no other malfunction is incurred. On a 1-3, the weapon malfunctions as described below, as per its individual qualities.

 • Blade Jam – Shiverswords which malfunction have their mechanisms or blades jam or fuse together. It takes 4AP to get the weapon working again, which usually involves just smacking the thing until it works.
 • Blowback – A Springstaff which malfunctions hits its wielder with a force pulse, knocking them prone.
 • Incendiary Explosion – A malfunction with an Aether Torch means that the dangerous aether and plasma gases which power the torch explode, destroying the weapon and injuring the wielder (Grunt Save DL 25).
 • Shorting – Arcblades and arcgloves will short-circuit on a malfunction.

Modding Special Melee Weapons

 • Aether Wither – A small device which is synced with an Aether Torch to cause it to shut off the moment it leaves its wielder's hands, preventing any collateral damage it might incur such as lighting nearby objects or persons on fire. Aether withers can also be synced in such a way as to disallow the torch linked to it to be used by other parties until the link can be disabled (Machinery DL 18, 4 AP).
 • Auto-Fuse – Prevents the first short of any combat with an arcing weapon.
 • Sickstick – A springstaff outfitted with sickstick technology will make a target nauseous and dizzy on a successful attack. Weapon becomes a stun weapon.
 • Soulstone – Adding additional soulstones to a ki-blade greatly enhance their destructive capabilities. Each additional soulstone doubles the effects of channeling ki into the weapon.
 • Tenebran Steel Blades – Any blade (including shiverswords and arcblades) made with Tenebran Steel adds +1 to the Hurt score of the weapon.
 • Tetron Coating – Tetron coating is applied to items which incorporate moving parts which may cause friction, heat, and heavy wear-and-tear. The Tetron prevents friction and assures less malfunctions and longer life for the item. Shiverswords coated with Tetron never jam.
 • Weapon Oil – Prevents the first blade jam of any combat with a shiversword.

Firearms

Firearms is a general term for things that go bang! Firearms are ranged weapons which require no physical strength to operate, but instead fire projectiles at high velocity at targets. Firearms are also called guns, blasters, shooters, and gats.

Name AP Parry Hurt Capacity Type Notes Cost
Fast Pistol 3 βˆ’2 6 5 P 𝕀
Pistol 4 βˆ’2 9 5 P 𝕀
Heavy Pistol 5 βˆ’2 12 5 P 𝕀
Fast Rifle ‑ 3 0 9 5 P 𝕀
Rifle ‑ 4 0 12 5 P 𝕀
Heavy Rifle ‑ 5 0 15 5 P 𝕀
 • Pistols - A pistol is a firearm which can be used in one hand.
 • Rifles - A rifle is any gun which normally requires two-hands to shoot. Most rifles are best fired from the shoulder and have a buttstock.

Firearms and Critical Failures

Because of the complexity of a firearm's internal workings and the fact that most cartridges contain explosives, propellants, chemicals, or other volatile materials, malfunctioning firearms can be more disastrous than having a bad day with a sword. Whenever a player rolls a crit-fail for an Attack which uses a firearm, consult the table below.

 • (6-10) Miss - Automatic miss, loss of ammo.
 • (5) Oops - The character drops the firearm. Requires 2 AP to retrieve.
 • (4) Jam - The ammunition does not load properly into the chamber as the magazine or cell is clogged with dirt. Requires a reload.
 • (3) Dud - The ammunition loads into the chamber, but does not fire. The cartridge must be carefully removed with a Machinery check (5 AP, DL 15).
 • (2) Hangfire - There is a short lag between pulling the trigger and ejection of the projectile. The weapon targets the closest ally as the firearm fires at an inopportune time.
 • (1) Explosion - A squib, a cartridge which is improperly prepared, or a gun with a faulty barrel will cause the gun to be blown apart, destroying the gun and injuring the wielder (Grunt Save DL 20).

Modding Firearms

Firearms and their ammunition can be modified in a number of ways.

 • Barrel Upgrade – Can be taken up to three times. Increases the Hurt of the weapon by one.
 • Bayonet – A blade which is attached to rifles, turning them into formidable melee weapons.
 • Capacity Upgrade – Increases the magazine capacity by one. Can be taken to a maximum capacity of 10.
 • Cheap – Weapon is available at half-price. On a crit-fail, the weapon always explodes.
 • Collapsible – While every firearm can be dismantled for the purposes of maintenance and repair, a collapsible weapon is one which allows the main components to be easily taken apart for ease of concealment/smuggling, in order to be put together later. Available only on rifles.
 • Grenade Launcher – An under-mounted launcher available on rifles which has its own trigger system and must be reloaded after every shot (4 AP).
 • Laser-tracking sight – Called shots can be made at no penalty.
 • Scope – Weapon may be fired at max range at no penalty.
 • Suppressor – Mutes the sound and dims the flash of gunfire. Perception checks to notice suppressed gunfire is DL 25 (non-suppressed is usually DL 10). Pistol suppressors limit effective range to 30 feet.
 • Tenebran Steel – Firearms made from this extremely resilient and expensive alloy are never destroyed as a result of a crit-fail. Instead, they are simply disabled. A firearm cannot be made of Tenebran Steel and also be Cheap.

Ammunition

 • Flashy Ammo – Blinds foes adjacent to wielder (Grunt Save DL 12).
 • Hydrostatic Ammo – Stuns target after a successful hit (Grunt Save DL 15).
 • Loud Ammo – Deafens foes adjacent to wielder (Grunt Save DL 12).
 • Non-lethal Ammo – Will not kill targets, but instead renders them unconscious.
 • Tainted Ammo – Deals Tainted Damage, which is harder to heal.

Available Models

Fast Pistols

 • Cobra MP-38 Machine Pistol – A full-automatic pistol which fires small caliber bullets at a rapid rate of fire. The Cobra has a large capacity of 11, which fits well with the mentality of many of its users: tell the target to kiss off and shoot as many bullets as possible at him. Popular with gangs, hired goons, and vigilantes. "Nothing strikes like a Cobra."
 • Selket M-5 Rebel – Originally designed for use by security personnel, this gun also found acceptance in the hands of civilians and soldiers, particularly tank crews. Its 6 shot capacity is modest, but the upgraded barrel (+1 Hurt) stops naysayers in their tracks. Crafted with a unique "no slip pistol-grip" with a metal band which wraps around the fingers, this weapon grants wielders a +2 bonus on attempts to resist being disarmed.

Common Pistols

 • Falke C-96 semi-auto – A semi-automatic pistol with a unique box-magazine in front of the trigger. Has a large capacity of 10 shots. Distinctively stylish and with a good reputation, the Falke C-96 is a hot item among collectors.
 • Speakeasy semi-auto – A well rounded semi-auto pistol with a 7 shot capacity and upgraded barrel (+2 Hurt). The Speakeasy is very often seen with a suppressor attached. The Speakeasy is a household name in handguns.

Heavy Pistols

 • Avenger Revolver – The Avenger is a popular, revolver-style pistol with an 8 shot capacity. Avenger revolvers are Reliable. Originally created by Bill Kleiner, a machinist who assassinated the murderer of his wife and child before the man was brought to trial. As the man ascended the steps to the courthouse, Kleiner approached and opened fire with his home-made weapon. Later, Kleiner sold the design to pay his lawyer's fees and was later released as a free man and commissioned to design more firearms.
 • Lupo Shotgun – A short-handled shotgun without a buttstock, the Lupo's shortened, upgraded barrel (+2 Hurt) functions more like a pistol than a rifle due to its ability to be easily handled one-handed. The knockdown ability of shotgun models is retained in the Lupo, making it a great close-quarters weapon and widely used as a self-defense weapon by wary citizens and ruthless bodyguards.
 • Thundermaker Revolver – Designed by Trowls with a Trowl's brawn and grip in mind, the Thundermaker is a bulky, revolver-style pistol with a 5 shot capacity and upgraded barrel (+3 Hurt). Watch out for that kickback, chum.
 • Magpie Pocket Pistol – The Magpie has a very low capacity of 4 shots, and may not be fitted with a suppressor, but is very inexpensive. Most often used for personal safety reasons. Magpie's are Reliable.

Fast Rifles

 • Swarzdag Assault Rifle – A collapsible automatic rifle with a capacity of 7, and an improved barrel (+1 Hurt). The Swarzdag is extremely resilient to weather, dirt and debris, and time: Swarzdags are Reliable. Favored by military and paramilitary groups for its versatility, the Swarzdag is unmatched as a weapon for any use.
 • Devilmaker 720 – The devilmaker's aim is clear: inflict the maximum amount of damage on a target. The improved barrel (+3 Hurt), and 6 shot capacity is nothing to laugh at, turning a novice shot into a right nasty one.

Common Rifles

 • Springer 1900 – The standard issue in many military units, the 1900 is outfitted with an 8 shot capacity and bayonet, and due to its extremely practical, light, and simple design, attempts to parry melee attacks using it receive a +1 bonus.
 • Hammersmith 2000 – The Hammersmith is manufactured with specialized infantry forces in mind: the kind which need to blow things up as well as blow them away. The Hammersmith comes standard with a grenade launcher and improved barrel (+1 Hurt). Hammersmiths cannot be made collapsible and cannot be outfitted with a bayonet.

Heavy Rifles

 • C&G Shotgun – The Coach and Gable shotgun is a standard amongst hunters, farmers, and anyone who likes to squint down 18" of cold, double-barreled steel at their disheartened enemies. C&G has been a household name in firearms since the inception of the shotgun and the design has changed very little since its origins. The C&G is made of Tenebran Steel, making it a durable weapon one could eventually pass on to a younger generation.
 • Pallbearer Sniper Rifle – For when one shot needs to take down the biggest, baddest goon you've ever seen through a scope.
 • Falke Cβˆ’670 Destroyer βˆ’ When it comes to tearing apart your enemies' morale within the first few shots of an engagement, there is no gun better than the Falke Cβˆ’670.

Special Firearms

These weapons rely on different methods than fired bullet-projectiles. Some require the use of a Manacell, an electro-chemical battery of sorts, or an Aethercell, a small can of highly condensed, pressurized gas.

Name AP Parry Hurt Capacity Type Notes Cost
Arc-gun 4 βˆ’2 12 5 E stun, requires Manacell 𝕀
Arc-lash 4 –2 6 N/A S, E stun, requires Manacell 𝕀
DR-153 Drachenrot Flamethrower 5 0 15 5 F 𝕀
Grappling Gun 4 βˆ’2 9 1 B requires Aethercell 𝕀
Thumpgun 4 βˆ’2 8 12 B knockdown, requires Manacell 𝕀
 • Arc-gun – A gun which shoots arcs of condensed electricity at short ranges. Powered by a mana cell.
 • Arc-lash – An arc-lash is a weapon reminiscent of a bullwhip: lightning fast and flexible.
 • Flamethrower – A large rifle which shoots flames via the muzzle. The flames are fueled by a cannister of highly-flammable, ultra-condensed Aether gas attached to the gun like a magazine.
 • Grappling Gun – A pistol which shoots small, barbed metal hooks, called "grapplers," attached to a length of cord. The hooks penetrate or grip stone, earth, steel and most other substances besides Tenebran Steel. The wielder can then use the attached cord to climb. The gun features a self-locking winch which aids in ascension, but the winch and grappler can only hold one non-Obese character without detaching.
 • Thumpgun – These guns, which can be handled with one hand or two, are larger than a pistol, but smaller than a rifle.

 • Shorting – Arcguns will short-circuit on a malfunction.

Other Ranged Weapons

These ranged weapons don't fall under the category of firearms.

Name AP Parry Hurt Capacity Type Notes Cost

Hunting Bow 5 βˆ’1 14 N/A P hard conceal, reliable 650𝕀
Shuriken 3 βˆ’2 2 N/A S, P easy conceal, thrown 10𝕀

 • Crossbow – Or pistol-crossbow, is a more modern version of the crossbow of antiquity. Crossbows are weapons used most often in specialized instances and have the advantage of being usable underwater, and of firing grappling hooks.
 • Hunting Bow – A traditional bow suitable for game-hunting or combat. Arrows shot by bows can be tipped with different materials, allowing for a wider range of functions than a pistol or rifle.
 • Shuriken – A generalized term for any small, sharp item which can be thrown at a target. Shuriken include throwing knives, ninja stars, darts, rocks, etc. Since Shuriken are thrown, the character's Muscle is added to the Attack Roll.

Modding Other Ranged Weapons

 • Bloodwood and Horn - Hunting bows reinforced with Bloodwood and Negoromi Horn are extremely flexible, enabling greater resilience without reducing the draw of the bowstring (becomes AP 4 weapon).
 • Spidercord - Bows and crossbows modified with Spidercord will never have a bowstring snap, and so crit-fails with Spidercord bows simply miss. Spidercord used in climbing can support the weight of as many people as needed and is nearly impossible to cut through.
 • Tombwood and Horn - Hunting bows reinforced with this hard, sturdy wood and the horn of Ushi-oni stand up well to strong draws (+1 Hurt).

Other Ammunition

 • Incendiary Arrows - Light a target on fire on a hit.
 • Explosive Arrows - These arrows explode on impact, dealing damage to nearby targets.
 • Poisons - These projectiles have been dipped in poison of some sort (see the entries on Poisons for more details). Because of the complexity of firearms and the fact that bullets are encased in a cartridge, firearm ammunition cannot be poisoned. Neither can weapons which rely on a Manacell or Aethercell. However, arrows, bolts, and shuriken can.
 • Netcaster - On a successful hit, the target is ensnared in a net. Usable with crossbows only.
 • Bolacaster - A pair of small metal orbs connected with a wire, which is fired at the legs of a target. On a successful hit, the target is knocked prone and is considered entangled. Usable with crossbows only.

Shields

Characters who use shields don't actually receive any sort of armor bonus from using one. Instead, they use the shield for parrying during their Defense Roll. Shields are usually the only weapons which can be used be parry ranged projectiles like bullets, arrows, grenades, etc.

Name AP Parry Hurt Type Notes Cost
Light infantry shield 4 +2 3 B 200𝕀
Heavy infantry shield 5 +4 5 B +1 to Trip 450𝕀
Arc shield 2 +2 4 B, E stun 1000𝕀
 • Light infantry shield – A simple shield with metal rivets and reinforcements, commonly strapped to the arm. Useful in melee combat as a bludgeoning weapon.
 • Heavy infantry shield – A large shieldβ€Šβ€”β€Šlarge enough to cover nearly from the shoulders to the knees. Often rectangular, made of metal, polycarbonate, or other resistant material. Its weight makes it particularly effective as a bludgeoning weapon, and shields can be used to knock an opponent backwards or prone.
 • Arc Shield – An arc shield is a light shield that has been modified to carry an electrical current across the face of it. When attacking with an arc shield, the field can be discharged into an opponent, shocking them. When defending, the shield's energy will arc at the attacker on a critically-successful parry roll, where the attacker takes the damage, not the defender. Arcshields require arcgloves to use without self-harm.

Armor

Good armor is hard to come by and many don't bother with it unless they know they are headed for trouble. Armor is most commonly seen in the hands of soldiers, law enforcement, and persons of political import. However, as it often means the difference between life and death, all of those who do wear it are eventually thankful for having it.

Simple Armor

 • Ballistic Vest – A very basic protective vest available on the civilian market.

Good Armor

 • Infantry Light Armor – Typical standard issue armor for infantry soldiers the world over.
 • Stealthsuit – A full body suit with night-vision goggles and armor plating. The suit automatically camouflages itself to blend in with surroundings. The Stealthsuit grants a +2 bonus on Stealth checks.
 • Zjenithi Carapace Armor – Designed ages ago by the Zjenithi, this armor utilizes interlocking chitinous plates. This armor a +2 bonus on Defense Rolls versus attacks which utilize fire, such as Aether Torches, Flamethrowers, and Incendiary Grenades.

Great Armor

 • Mariner Light Armor – An insulated, waterproof suit of armor reinforced, pressure-resistant materials, allowing deep-sea exploration and naval tactics. Comes standard with an UCA.
 • Night-guard Light Armor – A less expensive, less intricate version of the Night-guard Heavy Armor originally designed for paratroopers, this armor is also made of Tenebran Steel plates and Spidersteel threading, but covers only the most vital areas of the soldier's body.

Superior Armor

 • Night-guard Heavy Armor – The preferred armor of the Iron Legion, night-guard heavy armor turns the common soldier into a one-man tank.
 • Symbiont Armor – A symbiont is a very primitive living creature which is applied to a person in order to grant the person protective qualities.

Modding Armor

 • Arc Diffusers – An arc deflector is a small device which acts to divert arcs of electrical energy originating from a synced arcing weapon away from the wearer.Grants the wearer a +2 bonus on Defense Rolls against an opponents arcing weapon and makes the wearer immune from any erratic arcs coming from a comrade's weapon.
 • Spidersteel – This bio-engineered material is made from the silk of certain large spiders, and possesses extreme durability and elasticity. Armor made from threads and plates of spidersteel negates the hindrance penalties by one.
 • Tenebran Steel – Armor made with Tenebran Steel grants an additional +1 to the armor score of the item.
 • Warding Runes – A secret possessed by a scant few who still practice the Old Ways, Warding Runes function like a shield, deflecting projectiles away from the wearer. The runes grant the wearer a +2 to parry ranged attacks as if the wearer was using a shield, but allowing the use of both hands. A further shield can be used as well, for increased deflection, but this contradicts the purpose of the runes: to free the hands.

Food/Drink

 • Amrita – A liquor made from honey, rare spices and herbs, and Mana. The true recipe is ancient, dating back thousands of years, and some cultures propose their recipe has not changed in all that time (+4 MP).
 • Ambrosia – Because of its status as an anti-toxin, it is the preferred drink to consume among dangerous or mixed company or in strange countries (+2 Saves vs. Poison).
 • Edge – Most people prefer to smoke their Edge, as the commonly held assumption is that alcohol interferes with the heightened senses Edge provides, but some have been known to drink it. In this form Edge tastes of bitter almonds, and is slightly less potent than its other forms (+1 Perception, +1 Focus).
 • Harma – A mild drink made from the juices pressed from the Harmonium plant, Harma is praised for its ability to calm the senses and nerves without inducing fuzziness of memory or loss of motor function (+2 SP). The seeds of the Harma plant can also be dried and burned as incense, and its effects enjoyed that way. It is often found burning in the homes of healers and in places of worship or mysticism. Harma which is made with high concentrations of Harmonium nectar can have a hallucinogenic effect.
 • Ichor – A thick, dark drink which has a taste reminiscent of licorice or molasses. Ichor is made with small amounts of Ushioni blood, which lead some to abstain from consuming it on moral grounds. Ichor is proven to be a great preventative to many diseases (+4 to resisting or overcoming disease).
 • Lucy – With a strong taste which is almost sour, Lucy is notorious for making drinkers loud and hostile, and contributing to many hangovers and next-day apologies. Lucy contains several ingredients which make the drinker slightly paranoid and irritable (+2 Reaction). In moderation, quite enjoyable; in excess, rather terrible.
 • Poitine – Possibly the most potent of any alcoholic drink in production, poitine enjoys a status which meanders back and forth across the borders of legality in most places. Drinking poitine is considered a rite of passage in some cultures. Poitine contains several analgesics, which relieve pain (+2 Endurance).
 • Reptis Bloodwine – Made by draining the blood of a juvenile reptis and mixing it with strong liquor and other herbal ingredients, the concoction takes a rosy hue. Most bottles of reptis bloodwine are strangely shaped and the reptis is often found whole inside. Reptis Bloodwine is sweet and very pleasant smelling. In fact, the scent of it is enough to arouse not just drinkers, but anyone nearby (+2 Seduce).
 • Soma – Rumored to be made from concentrated prayer and worship of the old gods, this liquor is combined with the milk of Kirin and rosewater, making it sweet, thick, and smooth. (Doubles overnight healing, but induces deep sleep and vivid dreams).
 • Teikal – A robust, smoky-tasting liquor, pale yellow to amber in color. Teikal affects the parts of the brain which control basic fight-or-flight responses and fear, numbing these urges and as a result, is greatly preferred by soldiers (+2 Courage). Liquid courage, indeed.

Mechanical Augmentation

Tin Limbs and Clockwork Organs

 • Tin Limb - A mechanical arm or leg used as a highly-effective prosthesis.
 • Tin Plates -
 • Tin Lungs - Allows the character to breathe normally underwater or in environments with noxious gases/fumes.
 • Tin Liver - Makes the character immune to poison.
 • Tin Heart - Allows a character killed during combat to continue acting as normal until the end of combat.
 • Tin Stomach - Doubles the effectiveness of augmentative food and drink.
 • Tin Hands - Gives a character +1 H2H Hurt
 • Tin Legs - Gives a character +2 to skill checks which involve running or jumping.
 • Eyeshine - Many animals have a layer of tissue in their eyes called Tapetum Lucidum, which reflects visible light and greatly increases the quality of low-light and night-vision of these animals.
 • Handcannon - A handcannon is a large firearm which is constructed to fit inside of a tin arm. The barrel of the gun exits in the palm. The handcannon is linked to the muscle and complex internal mechanisms of the tin arm and requires training in order to operate safely and effectively. When the fingers of the hand are curled into a fist, the gun is considered to be on "safety" and will not fire.

Vehicles

In an age where technology is in high demand, one need look no further than their own street to glimpse the most prized and beloved piece of machinery most people own: their transportation.

Vehicle Combat

Vehicle Attack Roll
d10 + INT + Machinery Ranks + Vehicle's Hurt Score

If you are trying to ram another vehicle with the intent to disable/destroy it, the driver of the other vehicle makes a Vehicle Defense Roll.

Vehicle Defense Roll
d10 + INT + Machinery Ranks + Vehicle's Plating Score

In the case of using a car to attempt to strike a pedestrian, the Vehicle Attack Roll is opposed by a Dodge Defense Roll. If you were wondering, vehicles cannot normally be parried.

When a person in (or on) a car wants to attack a passenger in another car, or if a pedestrian wants to attack a driver or passenger in a car (usually by shooting them), the attacker needs to make a called shot.

If a pedestrian or passenger wants to attack an opposing vehicle itself with the intent of disabling/destroying it, an Attack Roll is made which is opposed by a Vehicle Defense Roll.

Crashing

When a vehicle is brought to 0 HP, it is considered destroyed. If the car is still moving (it isn't stopped or parked, etc.) it crashes. When a vehicle crashes, the passengers inside must make a Grunt Save against a DL determined by the vehicle or suffer the difference as damage. After the crash, the car comes to a complete stop and any survivors can safely disembark.

Vehicle Chases

Vehicles are also often used to flee from situations of danger or to chase down an intended target. If a vehicle is being pursued, opposing Machinery checks are made by the drivers. These checks happen once a round and are free (0 AP). If the car attempting to flee successfully consecutively wins three of these checks, they have evaded and lost their pursuers. A critical success by the quarry or a critical failure by the pursuers counts as two successes for the quarry. During the time the chase is on, attacks can be made as necessary.

In the case of attempting to tail another vehicle whose passengers are unaware of your attentions, make an Intellect + Machinery check which will be opposed by a Cunning + Perception check. This is modified by the tailing vehicle's profile score.

Cars

Name
The type and design of car.
Hurt
The amount of damage the vehicle does when it hits something, which is factored into the Vehicle Attack Roll.
Vehicle Armor/Plating

The bonus to the Vehicle Defense Roll made when opposing an attack on the vehicle.

Speed

The bonus to Machinery checks made to outrun or tail other vehicles.

Profile

The amount of attention the vehicle draws, in terms of a penalty factored into Stealth checks. The louder, flashier or more modded out a vehicle is, the more notice it draws.

Passengers

The maximum amount of passengers, including the driver, which can pile into the vehicle. Unless stated otherwise, most vehicles require a minimum of one driver.

Terrain

The types of terrain the vehicle can safely function in. Whenever a vehicle is operated in terrain which is not appropriate for it, it will take damage until it is returned to acceptable terrain or until it breaks down. Terrain types include Street, Light, and Rough.

HP

The amount of damage the vehicle can take before it is considered disabled. Disabled vehicles can be repaired, but destroyed vehicles cannot.

Cost

The amount the vehicle costs to buy, in sovereigns.

 • Arc Collar – Packmasters attach these collars to the necks, or rarely wrists/ankles, of prisoners, laborers, slaves, or enemies. The packmaster can remotely activate the collar, which sends a shock into the body of the host. Arc collars are often used to "train" captives and are sometimes used in conjunction with Mana Inhibitor Collars (M.I.C.).
 • Bloodbook – Relics of the Old Ways, a set of bloodbooks were a way of communicating over long distances. What was written in blood in one book could be read in either all the books or in a single master tome, depending on how the books were enchanted. Since the advent of radio communications, bloodbooks have slightly decreased in value, but due to their easily-disguised nature, they are still utilized.
 • Cloudstuff
 • Combustion Collar – Barbaric devises still in use by ruthless cultures and slavers, these collars attach to their hosts and remain there until removed by a trained packmaster. The packmaster may activate the collar, at which time it explodes, obviously killing the host and killing or wounding anyone nearby. Any attempt to remove the collar through force results in immediate activation.
 • Comlink
 • Dreamstones
 • Focus Magnet – A Focus Magnet is a pucklike stone which can be used to push (diamagnetism) or pull (paramagnetism) metal objects through the expenditure of MP.
 • Gun Oil – A character can trade one use of gun oil to assure a "Miss" (6-10) outcome on the firearm crit-fail chart.
 • Krakentooth Ink
 • Mana Inhibitor Collar – Less gruesome than the combustion collar, the M.I.C. continually drains the Mana energy inherent to the host, stopping it from activating any powers, preventing it from casting spells, and keeping it in a state of mild exhaustion. These collars keep a host at a constant state of 0 MP and Stage One on the Knockout Track.
 • Mana Cell – a highly efficient, productive energy source for devices and vehicles.
 • Memory Stones – Small precious gems which contain memories. The gems are worth a good deal of money on the black market, depending on the memory.
 • Night-vision goggles –

 • Riding Horse – Horses serve as excellent transportation and beasts of burden. However, most horses do not fare well in the chaos of combat. Riding horses require their riders to make Personality + Animal Control or Agility + Ride checks (2 AP) against a DL of 12 for each round of combat to keep the horse from throwing its rider and running away. If the check is failed, the rider takes the difference as damage.
 • Warhorse – Warhorses are trained in the arts of warfare and do not require their riders to make checks to avoid being throw simply because they are in combat.
 • Donkey – Donkeys and mules are perfect beasts for hauling heavy gear or awkward tools, or for pulling heavy objects in a harness. Donkeys make poor mounts for combat purposes and will always throw their rider and run away if confronted with hostile forces.
 • Blackbeak – Blackbeaks are stout, bipedal mounts with short vestigial wings and powerful legs, which they use to jump large distances and propel themselves furiously over land. They derive their name from their sharp beaks which are capable of easily rending flesh. Blackbeaks make poor beasts of burden, since their frame is not suited for much cargo, but make great mounts in combat thanks to their aggressive natures and the ease with which they are domesticated. For more information on these creatures, see the Blackbeak entry.
 • Bullhound – Bullhounds are the preferred mounts of Goblyn warriors. Bullhounds also make great guard dogs.
