In short: applying force. The Smash skill has more uses than its name implies. Smash represents quick feats of strength: bursting through rope or chain bonds, prying a chest open, breaking down a door, or yanking a knife out of an opponent's hands. Where Lift is concerned with moving weight, Smash is about employing momentum or pressure.
Difficulty
The difficulty for a Smash check deals with the solidness or fortitude of the object in question. Typically, this is used to strong-arm locks, doors, and the like. Here are some examples for forcing open a locked door.
Example | DL |
---|---|
A simple wooden door | 8 |
A standard wooden door | 12 |
A reinforced wooden door | 16 |
Iron bars or a barred door | 20 |
A metal door | 25 |
A stone door | 30 |
Here are some examples for bursting bonds.

Chains/manacles | 20 |
Opposed Rolls
Smash can be used in opposition when two characters are vying for the same object or against each other (for instance, arm wrestling, trying to pry a knife away from a madman, to escape from a Grab, etc). Competing for an object calls for opposed Smash rolls. Escaping a Grab is opposed by the attacker's Lift check.
Retry
Opposed rolls cannot be retried (without spending a fate point) as failure means the other character wins. Non-opposed rolls can be retried as often as time allows.
