There are many ghost stories in existence. It would be quite scary to glimpse your great, great grandfather standing at the top of the stairs when you know he's been dead for fifty years. Even scarier would be if he started talking to you. Truly terrifying, then, would be if he possessed your toaster and flew around the house in it screaming. In Elysium, there are some beings whose will is too strong to be extinguished by death (be it the will to help, harm, protect, or just raise hell). These souls drift untethered over the face of the world until they find an acceptable shell. These shells provide the Dolons with a means of interaction with the world.

Appearance

Because a Dolon requires a shell to interact physically with the material world, the appearance of Dolons as a race is varied. Most Dolons seek out shells which give them some semblance of the appearance that they had in life. For instance, a soldier would seek out a uniform or suit of plate mail while a Sidhe would seek out a bed of leaves. Some Dolons might even seek to use their decomposing bodies as shells. Whatever the shell, a Dolon needs one, and within it is seen a faintly humanoid cloud of churning mists.

Personality

While Dolon personality remains as varied as Dolon appearance, most beings are strongly affected by the experience of death. Heartless murderers might seek to help the families of those they killed or selfless martyrs might seek retribution on their foes. Some Dolons don't even remember their previous lives.

Habitat

No one can say for sure what waits on the other side of death. What one can say for sure is that death is not always an end. Unlike the phantoms of conventional ghost-stories, however, Dolons are not free to walk through walls and aren't tied to a specific place (not usually, at least). They are bound by the same laws that govern the other beings of the Otherworld, though some have extraordinary powers which allow them some interesting feats.

Society

Most Dolons live solitary existences since most cultures and beings view them as profane. Some cultures such as the citizens of Tenebra view Dolons as superior beings. Some primitive and not-so-primitive cultures even worship them as gods. Dolons hold down occupations that make them happy, mostly, since they have little to fear in the way of dying again.

Adventurers

Dolons can take to the road for countless reasons. Some feel they still have a job to do in the world and set about righting wrongs, wronging rights, or completing quests and projects.
