The mage sends magical energy into the actual sound waves coming out of an object or area; this causes the sound to increase in loudness. Physically, for every level of spell, the noise volume doubles. This means each spell level raises the dB (decibel) level by 10. Normal conversation is around 60 dB. A loud orchestra is 98 dB. Front row seats at a rock concert get about 110 dB. A shotgun fires at 170 dB. Noises above 140 dB should cause temporary deafness (GM's discretion). Concerning sounds being heard over distance, depending on environmental effects, a sound will decrease by 6 dB per doubling of distance from the sound. If the dB of a sound is 150 at 3 feet, at 6 feet it will be 144, at 12 feet - 138, at 24 - 132, etc. Thus, if 20 feet away from a sound registers 110 dB (a rock concert), at almost a mile away, it will still be around 60 dB (normal conversation). So, with this spell at level 5, the mage could amplify a normal conversation to be heard at a distance of a mile clearly.

Intensity Effects

  1. Double a sound's volume (raise by 10 dB).
  2. Quadruple a sound's volume (raise by 20 dB).
  3. Increase volume by a factor of 8 (raise by 30 dB).
  4. Increase volume by a factor of 16 (raise by 40 dB).
  5. Increase volume by a factor of 32 (raise by 50 dB).
